What’s blue at Tiffany’s?
Posted in Uncategorized on September 19, 2009| Leave a Comment »
Tiffany celebrates nature’s patterns of intricate beauty with tender vines of 355 round and marquise diamonds that form a winding path through 441 perfectly matched sapphires. In fact, the exquisite stones began their journey long before, at the stonecutter’s bench. In a feat of skill and precision, Tiffany stonecutters painstakingly cut each diamond that was then bead set in platinum, and hand carved each sapphire to fit the complex channel setting. The result captures the graceful movement of vines blooming against a midnight sky. (more…)

Rip off? CashMyGold buying old jewellery ‘gives only fraction of true value’

Hard-pressed families tempted to sell their old gold jewellery to cover essential bills risk being ripped off, it is claimed.
Tens of thousands have been tempted by high-profile advertising campaigns offering money to those who want to sell old gold and silver jewellery.
The firm CashMyGold, which is spending large sums on commercials on daytime TV, is using the slogan ‘Best prices paid for your gold’ to tempt customers.
But a shopping exercise found the company offered only a fraction of the true value of the gold and silver it was sent by a client.
Macintyres, an Edinburgh jewellery firm, sent batches of gold and silver for which it paid £226.07 to CashMyGold to see how much it would pay.
CashMyGold sent a cheque for just £90.37 – a reduction of £135.70 on the true value.
When Gaynor Macintyre, the Scottish firm’s co-director, complained CashMyGold sent a second cheque for £88.63.

Jewelry, especially ring, means a lot to women. Perhaps every woman is dreaming of the diamond wedding ring from her white charming, because the ring is also a kind of commitment. Wedding ring can be luxurious or very simple as long as it represents the deep love. But it is not the case with the fashion ring, which should be innovative and eye catching.
This Bulles Monogram Ring from Louis Vuitton is such a creative and adorable little piece. It plays on the reflection of the metal LV initials and monogram pieces trapped inside resin bubbles . (more…)

This collection, designed in collaboration with Pharrell Williams and Camille Miceli, the creative consultant of Louis Vuitton, actually is the symbol of a dynasty, synonymous with a coat of arms and originates from French Heraldry. Blason is a collection of avant-garde pieces inspired by “the music universe” and features combinations of white gold with diamonds and yellow gold with diamonds. Personally, the most charming one is the Crown Bracelet. (more…)

What influenced you to get into design? Did you have any mentors?
- I have always been very creative, from childhood, all through my life. Drawing, painting, wood work, stained glass design, knitting, and crochet. It is almost as if there was no other choice. I never even considered a non-creative/design career. I always wanted to work in the fashion industry, but it was more luck than anything ells that I landed at Erickson Beamon in London. And there I found my mentor in Vicki Sarge, the other half of Erickson Beamon.
Ever wonder what happens to you when the First Lady, the one and only Michelle Obama, wears something you’ve created?
“Since Mrs. O wore one of my necklaces I have hardly had time to sleep,” says Pieter Erasmus. “Our web-site crashed a few times because the traffic on ST-ERASMUS.COM is just incredible.”
Jewelry designer Pieter Erasmus has been getting a lot of attention lately and for all the right reasons. The designer behind First Lady Michelle Obama’s statement making necklace worn at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner last month is getting the much deserved attention for his work. The Mobama effect is in full force and everything she touches really does turn to “sold.” Glamazon Diaries

At Christie’s late spring London sale of jewelry on June 10, signed jewels set with good quality stones sold like hot cakes regardless of style or period.
A necklace made from oval gold links joined by diamond-set clasps and signed Cartier Paris excited bidders, who sent it climbing to $42,750, more than triple the estimate.
>>
LONDON — Some miracles have a way of going unnoticed. Gems and jewels have been doing brilliantly at auction for months, as if bidders had never been told that there is a recession. And yet this has not aroused much commentary.
Where aristocratic provenance could be established, jewels soared sky-high. A diadem and necklace made by Cartier in 1912 for Olga Princess Paley, Countess of Hohenfelsen, both doubled their high estimates. The diadem (described as an “aigrette tiara”) set with rose-cut diamonds and two aquamarines, brought $512,014.

Faberge Jeweller To The Tsars Back After 90 Years

Firebird has more than 100 different coloured diamonds
A world-famous name in jewellery for the super-rich has been resurrected after more than 90 years – despite the global recession.
Faberge was made famous by Peter Carl Faberge, who fashioned beautiful and intricate Easter eggs from precious metals for the Tsars of Russia and other rulers around the world in the 19th century.
When the Bolsheviks seized power in 1917 he and his family were forced to flee the country, and all his works were taken into possession of the state.
Since that date, no more Faberge jewellery has ever been made – until now.
An investment firm called Pallinghurst Resources, backed by the likes of asset management specialists Investec, has bought the rights and title to the famous name and set up a new version of Faberge.
The company has now released its first collection, a series of 100 pieces that range in price between £24,000 and £4.2m.
Each piece is a one-off, ranging from rings featuring gigantic gems to creatures such as seahorses and birds of paradise cast in precious metals.
The firm will not have any high street stores beyond a boutique in Switzerland, relying instead on a website in which it has invested heavily to try to anticipate the needs of the very wealthy. (more…)

Dark Jewelry For Divorcées
Posted in Uncategorized on September 8, 2009| Leave a Comment »
London jewelry designer Gisèle Ganne has created a line of divorce jewelry, because people who are giddy with love shouldn’t be the only ones allowed to wear a nice-looking ring. “I use union and marriage symbols and subvert them to show the inevitability of the breakup, but also show that from these ashes may raise new life,” Ganne writes on her website. This, along with her reminder that 42 percent of U.K. marriages end in divorce, kind of depresses us. If breakups are inevitable, then what’s the point in starting a new relationship? But wearing her eerie jewelry, which Edgar Allan Poe would have appreciated, the next time we split up with someone could be a good consolation prize to go along with a broken heart. Hope Diamond to get makeover

The world’s most famous jewel – the Hope diamond – is to be given a makeover by Harry Winston to honour the 50th anniversary of its donation to the Smithsonian Institute. In 1958, the diamond was given to the Smithsonian as a “gift to the American people” by Harry Winston himself and now the American public is being invited to vote of a new design for the 45.52 carat blue diamond. The three designs, which symbolise hope in America, can be voted for at www.smithsonianchannel.com from August 19 to September 7 2009. The final setting will then be unveiled in Washington later this year before it is returned to its original setting at the end of 2010.

It’s the sight any party organiser worth their fee wants to see – girl of the moment Lily Allen walking through the door.
Sadly for the organisers of a launch party at Matches boutique last night she stayed for just one minute, before walking straight back out.
Luckily for those behind the Harper’s Bazaar Women Of The Year Awards she was happy to stay there longer.

As the price of gold nears $1,000 per Troy ounce, it is safe to say that precious metal has been one of this decade’s best performing assets, rising on average by 15 per cent per year.
Analysts in the City ascribe the latest surge in the price of bank vault bullion bars, coins and jewellery to the threat of inflation.
Tiffany & Co.: If Bling Had a Hall of Fame
Posted in Uncategorized, tagged bling on September 8, 2009| Leave a Comment »
WALL STREET was alive with unintentional self-parody last week. A construction pit was yawning in front of the heart of American capitalism, the New York Stock Exchange, which has sunk to selling ad space on its own forehead: Its Corinthian pillars were obscured by a vinyl billboard for a the Holiday Inn (especially ironic since the sculpture on the pediment above the columns is loftily entitled “Integrity Protecting the Works of Man”).
Down the cobblestone alleys, amid stands selling $6 neckties and discount sunglasses in a greasy haze from bumper-to-bumper hot dog carts, I received a gift from the metaphor gods: A woman in her 80s wearing stretch-cotton leggings, running shoes, a baseball cap and an XL T-shirt with TIFFANY & CO. across the front.
Tiffany’s roots run deep in our nation’s history. Tiffany is as American as guns. Since opening in 1837, it has survived the Civil War, two World Wars, the Panic of 1893, the Great Depression, the psychedelic movement and 171 holiday seasons, supplying niceties from diamonds to cuspidors to dog whips. It designed a pitcher for the Lincoln inaugural, and made swords for the Civil War.
