Alison Lewis, 35, seen here in the Philadelphia home she shares with her boyfriend, is part of a wave of young product designers intent on embedding electronics into “soft” areas like fashion or home furnishings.
Her necklace is a filigree bead with an LED inside. (LED beads are like tiny glowing sequins). The walls are painted with Aqua Glow by Valspar. NYT
Ceramic teacups have radio frequency ID tags on their bases; when placed on a ‘”reader,” they signal videos to play on the television.
Ms. Lewis hopes to engage other young women in her blinking, D.I.Y. world. She keeps a blog, an electronic crafter’s how-to guide called Iheartswitch.com; her book, “Switch Craft: Battery-Powered Crafts to Make and Sew,” was published last year.
Ms. Lewis designed this flexible silk vase with another designer, Allison Conner. The test-tube bud vases light up when an embedded device detects sound.
